Barcoding

Barcoding, Inc. has worked in data capture for 25 years. It serves businesses of every size, from a simple barcode label to a full AIDC or RFID deployment, and its customers depend on fleets of mobile devices to run their operations. BOS, Barcoding Online Services, was where those customers saw and managed their devices.

The challenge

A device management service has to answer the same questions every day: where each device is, whether it works, what has happened to it and where it goes next. When a device fails, it has to go out for repair and come back without the record losing track of it.

For the new version of BOS, Barcoding had a choice: carry the old application forward to new technology, or build a new generation of the platform. It chose a rewrite over a port, and chose Megsoft to build it.

What Megsoft built

Megsoft's team built the new BOS from the ground up as a custom application: cloud based, responsive on any screen, and designed around a map, so managing assets became as easy as a click.

Customers reached their device data over a secure connection on the BOS website, with the fleet view, repairs, relocations, history and reports in one service.

What the platform brought together

A live view of the fleet

A real-time snapshot of every device, with its location and status as soon as a user logged in.

Repairs in the platform

RMAs requested in the interface, with each device's status updated automatically as the repair moved along.

Moves between sites

Devices marked to move to other locations, in the same service that tracked them.

History and reports

Each device kept its asset history, and reports summarized the fleet.

Why it matters

For a company whose customers depend on their devices, the management platform is part of the product. Rebuilding BOS from the ground up gave Barcoding's customers one modern service for the location, status, repairs and history of every device they run.
